Paul Speight is Professor in Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology at the School of Clinical Dentistry, University of Sheffield. He is a diagnostic pathologist with special expertise in head and neck cancer and salivary gland tumours.
He is a Past-President of the International Association of Oral Pathologists, the British Society for Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology and the British Society for Oral and Dental Research. He has served on numerous national and international committees including for IADR, RAE2008, REF2014, NIHR, and Health Education England and, until 2017, he chaired the Research Committee and the Awards Committee at the Faculty of Dental Surgery, Royal College of Surgeons of England. He is current Chair of the Scottish Dental Academic Board.
His main research interests are in the field of oral cancer, including biomarkers and studies to evaluate early detection and screening in primary care. He has received a number of awards including a Distinguished Scientist Award from the International Association for Dental Research (2008), Award for Leadership, Achievement and Dedication (American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, 2008), Senate Award for Excellence in Leadership (University of Sheffield, 2012) and the David L Turpin Award for Evidence-based Research (American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, 2015). He has published over 240 original research papers as well as a number of books and book chapters
