Dr. Jane M. Grant-Kels

Jane M. Grant-Kels, MD, FAAD, is Vice Chair of the Department of Dermatology, Associate Director of the UConn Dermatology Residency Program, Founding Director of the Cutaneous Oncology Center and Melanoma Programs, and Professor of Dermatology, Pathology and Pediatrics at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine. Jane is the founding Chair of the Department of Dermatology at the University of Connecticut, which she led from 1979-2015. She is also the founding Director of the Dermatology Residency Program and the founding Director of the Dermatopathology Laboratory at UConn. She is also Adjunct Professor of Dermatology at the University of Florida. Dr. Grant-Kels attended Smith College and Cornell University Medical College. She then trained in pediatrics and dermatology at Cornell’s New York Hospital. Following her residency, she completed a dermatopathology fellowship at New York University with Dr. A Bernard Ackerman. Jane serves on numerous editorial boards related to her field and was the founding Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Clinical Medicine and the founding Co-Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Women’s Dermatology. Presently she is Deputy Editor of the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology and Associate Editor for Dermatology for the Annals of Internal Medicine. She has been elected to be a board member to the following boards: Women’s Dermatologic Society Board, Association of Professors of Dermatology Board and American Academy of Dermatology Board of Directors. She was Vice President of the AAD from March 2019 until March 2020. She was the recipient of the Women’s Dermatologic Society Rose Hirschler Award in 2018, the AAD Professionalism Award in 2014, as well as AAD Presidential Citations in 2016, 2017 and 2021. The AAD Presidential citation referred to Jane as “the American Academy of Dermatology’s own Ruth Bader Ginsberg, creative and kind”. Her areas of interest are pigmented lesions, reflectance confocal microscopy, dermoscopy and dermatoethics. She has published over 400 peer reviewed manuscripts, over 145 chapters, guest edited 22 journals, and edited or co-authored 8 books. She has also delivered over 800 invited lectures. She has been married for over 47 years, has two children and five grandchildren.
